Girlguiding – Website showcasing adventurous locations and activities across the UK

2018 – ongoing
WebsitesStrategy

Girlguiding is the leading charity for girls and young women in the UK, empowering them to be their best and face the challenges of growing up today.

Historically, Girlguiding’s activity offer was split across four separate websites and they were looking to consolidate the information in a unified place. Having completed a refresh of their digital brand, they asked us to work with them on the project.

Information for multiple locations and audiences

The centres offered guides, young people, families and corporate clients the opportunity to take part in events and activities and stay in affordable accommodation. Girlguiding wanted to be able to present a more coherent sense of what was available for their core audiences, while retaining the flexibility to show the diversity of activity at each of the locations.

To ensure that each of the four centres and audience groups were given enough prominence we developed a set of landing pages for each. The centre pages held a wealth of information about accommodation, prices and travel so were afforded a sub navigation to accommodate it. For the audience landing pages, which would be the target destination for marketing activity, all of the information users needed was provided on a single scrolling page.

Activities and events distributed across the site

At the core of the website was a set of over 40 different activities and around 100 upcoming events, each with their own information regarding available locations and suitable age groups. We developed a taxonomy that allowed activities and events to to be tagged by audience group and location to ensure that users only saw the most relevant information in any context.

Distinctive combination of photography and iconography

The website offered a bold image-led design and custom iconography which was developed for each of the activities. In tandem with the digital guidelines we had previously developed, it helped to reinvigorate Girlguiding’s activity online and directly informed the design and approach of subsequent digital work.

Most of the activity centres were closed in 2023 and the website was stripped back to service the sole remaining location in central London.
